I did this once in grade school back in the early 1940s when I found a dime on the way to school and stopped and bought a little brown bag $.10 worth a penny candy. My teacher Miss Cooper caught me sneaking a piece and made me get up and go to the back of the room and dump every bit of it in the garbage can. I had not had breakfast that morning but then I never did because we just didn’t have the food, I didn’t have lunch because we were supposed to bring our own and we didn’t have the food. When I got home I had my usual supper of pinto beans and fried potatoes. Thank God for my mother who kept all seven of us fed. I have never forgotten Miss Cooper as one of the most heartless people I ever knew and I am 86 years old.
