Implementation of an AI Algorithm for Measurement of Total Kidney

Dr. Theodora Potretzke, a Radiologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, shares results of her study appearing in the May 2023 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where she describes the implementation of an AI algorithm in clinical practice to evaluate total kidney volume in polycystic kidney disease. She found the previously validated algorithm performed as expected when implemented in the clinical environment with study results showing high levels of correlation between the algorithm output volumes when compared with a subset of cases in which the volumes were manually edited. Dr. Potretzke noted the use of the algorithm offers near real-time results for clinicians and feels development of such algorithms is reproducible at other institutions if there is careful development and validation, and if coordinated multidisciplinary implementation is pursued in the clinical environment.
