Instant Pot Caramel (Dulce de Leche)

Caramel. One of those things we all LOVE to eat, but is literally one of the messiest things ever to make on the stove. And good luck rinsing those pots/pans/utensils. At least you'll get muscles after doing it since it takes some serious scrub work.

All you really need to achieve an amazing caramel is one thing: a can of sweetened condensed milk. And the Instant Pot is going to see to it that you have absolutely ZERO mess or hassles to deal with during the clean up.

And as if making this in the Instant Pot wasn't the best part, the things you can DO with this know no limitations. Have it Dulce de Leche style with some sea salt sprinkled on top - dip apples, cakes and pretzels in it, make a caramel pie, serve it with ice cream. Whichever you choose, you cannot go wrong because...CARAMEL!

And buy at these links below for GREAT prices!:

I always enjoyed dulce de leche as a child. When made with the cans produced from Mexico, they have a very special taste. We used to remove the label from the can and boil the can when we made beans. When the beans were done, the dulce was done. This is so much faster for sure. Love it!

Actually, my mother has been making this for 40 years in a pressure cooker. I just made 4 cans this weekend. Just peel the label off, lay the unopened cans on their sides, on a strainer inside the pressure cooker, cover the cans with at least one inch of water, cook on high pressure for 12 minutes, removed from heat and allow the pressure cooker to depressurize and cool naturally. Delicious! Enjoy!

Another really good way to use this for a pie filling is to fold it into cool whip or a similar thing in an equal amount before putting it in the pie crust. The end result is fluffier and still very good.

This is the BEST!! I am so glad you showed us one to do *safely* instead of the possibly-explode-and-kill-you method, that is cooked in a sealed can! Mine turned out FANTASTIC! Although, I did go against your recipe a little by not letting it sit for 20 minutes. Let's be honest...I couldn't wait! I decided to just plunge ahead and hold the can with a towel and stir after waiting about 4-5 minutes. Turned out to be the best thing, because stirring helped get all that thick milk that settles on the bottom and in the crevices up; because it was still nice and super hot, which made it melt into the other milk on the top. As a result, it actually was almost perfectly smooth when all was said and done. Thanks for this awesome way to make it!

This was unbelievable - unbelievably easy and unbelievably yummy. We taste tested it without the vanilla extract and it so did not need a drop of it.Thanks for a fabulous recipe. We had it over cheesecake tonight. There's enough left over after covering the cheesecake that I have no idea what we'll do with it. I suspect it will disappear before that's decided.

- In Mexico, it’s spread on pancakes. Try it! 😋
- I’d also suggest to use it in a caramel poke cake!
- cake, cupcakes, & ice cream topping, or drizzled on for looks.
- pumped into muffins, donuts, etc
- drizzle on bananas
- oh the ideas!

In Peru, they put this stuff between 2 large plain biscuits. Best sandwich cookies ever!

I have always made it on the stove top. Can't wait to try it in the Instant Pot. Vanilla is not necessary though 🙂.

You saved my butt with this recipe! I forgot to make my dulce de leche the day before (always cook it in the can on the stove top) and other wise would not have had time. This came out perfectly. Game changer!
