I gave Linux a try but it didn't work out. Here is why. Also, how rendering video on the new system compares to rendering on the old system.

Here is what works for me: I dual booted my computer with Windows 10 and Linux Mint 18. I use Linux for my day to day stuff, and if I need to use software that is Windows only, I just reboot and do my stuff in Windows. I use a SSD for my boot drive so the reboot is really quick, even with that wretched "Fast Startup" disabled. Congratulations on the new computer. My main rig is almost 6 years old and it's still having no issues serving my needs, hope you get that kind of mileage out of your new computer.

Bad news on the thumbnails. Maybe another subscriber who is more familiar with Linux can post a fix, or suggest a distribution where vid file thumbnails work, as this is an important feature for video editors. Glad to hear about the faster-than-real-time render speeds. I also plan to do 32GB on my upcoming build, so it is good to know that Adobe software was able to use it.

I have the 200R and managed to keep the mechanical drives quiet by squeezing some rubber grommets between the drives and the chassis. Might be worth trying.

I have 2 Toshiba like this from years ago (only copy it's not on always) and, I think, are very good quality
Edit: sorry for the thumbnails I use Mint and Ubuntu from years a go and this is not a problem. Next time will be better. Linux it's waiting for you again :)

Your story is much the same as mine. I have tried Linux but like you things do not always work. After dumping iTunes I now use MusicBee. Not available in Linux, my video editing software, not available. As these are my most used programmes, Linux had to go. Sadly, no real alternative to Windows 10.

Regarding the lack of thumbnails (I find it annoying too), I believe the Cinnamon Desktop uses GNOME Nautilus as a file explorer. You could've went with Linux Mint with the KDE/Plasma Desktop, or just installed Dolphin (a different file manager, which is included with the KDE/Plasma environment). Though, with Dolphin, you'll have to click a button to enable thumbnails.

Though, I will understand staying on Windows 10 for the time being.

I tried to dabble with linux around 2004-2006. In 2006 I decided to go back to windows. Try running autocad with wine, it was a pain. At the time the only version I could get to work with wine was autocad 14, which at the time was already pretty outdated when we used autocad 2004 at school.

I've been using Linux since 1995, and I can completely understand why you went back to Windows after discovering Linux wasn't going to meet your needs yet. You shouldn't have to think about basic things like thumbnails, and waste time troubleshooting it. You're using the computer to try to get work done.

I haven't tried recently, but last time I tried to edit video in Linux, the results weren't very good (to put it kindly). I had to go back to MacOS X and iMovie/Final Cut Pro because at least those worked without crashing at random.

For Windows, since I have the luxury of not -needing- to use Windows for anything at home, I restrict Windows 10 to its own security zone (so it can't even touch my internal network) and just run it when I absolutely must use it. At work, it's a different story, since my employer is responsible for trying to stop corporate data leaking out of their Windows 10 machines. Given that we're hooked up to parts of MS's cloud, they apparently don't care about such leakage very much.

Is it windows 10 home or pro? With Pro you can pretty much eradicate the app problem by killing the store in gpedit.msc. About spying: Try destroy windows 10 spying. It'll block pretty much everything by means of the hosts file :)

I agree about windows 10. They should throw that ceo out of the Microsoft building.

maybe you could try lubuntu. it is a spin off of ubuntu. annoyingly though it is not very good at music work or at least just too complicated to set up.

I, as well, cannot trust Linux when things just need to get done. However I can't stand Windows 10 (even tough I get exposed to it at university), so I stick with Windows 7. And when it's no longer supported by Microsoft, well I some time to think about what to do...

would you like an ultra wide screen for editing like a 34 inch or more?
