Comics Drax is essentially a Thanos-killing WMD. He essentially exists to fuck Thanos' shit up.

So “The Collector” in the comics is part of a group of beings that have been around for eons and even though he may not be the most powerful he is still a cosmic entity with higher than most durability. Even if killed he is regenerated in a new body but likes to collect the weapon that killed his because there aren’t many that can. In the same comic that he mentions this Drax is going through a “pacifist” phase but he is needed to stop the collector from fighting another powerful being and seeing as he couldn’t be “permanently” killed he one-shots both of the beings. Drax in the comics is just built different.

Before the movie, I always saw Drax more as a Martian Manhunter type. The stoic, monk-like alien with a single minded objective and a bevy of alien abilities to aid him.
