Some plants like hot peppers i will grow two seedlings side by side, they support each other and cover each other's fruits. You get twice as many peppers in the same area you would grow one. We've been doing that in Asia for a very long time. In some places where you find chili peppers growing naturalized, they grow clustered together because all the seeds in a pod sprout together.

You can totally do companion planting in larger pots. Beans and corn are a classic— start the corn first and the beans will trellis up.

I agree. I ammend all my soil with homemade compost (which at my farm is animal-by-product-free). I only use VEGETATION in my my compost and grow very healthy crops❤.
