The Women's Reservation Bill that seeks to provide 33 per cent quota for women in Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies was introduced in the Lok Sabha today in the ongoing special session of Parliament. Calling September 19 a “historic day”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the Opposition to unanimously pass the Bill - ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ – that has been stuck for nearly three decades.

I have said it and I am saying this again. This will create massive problems when implemented. Better was make it mandatory for parties to give 33% seats to women. That will ensure that the right women candidates get tickets. Everybody knows the reality of women's reservation in local bodies. Not even 5% or maybe even 0% of women candidates win on their own merit. They win on the name of some male member in their family.
Quota within quota is even more problematic. If you give quota with quota i.e. women reservation plus caste reservation you are absolutely limiting down the number of eligible candidates. Right now I believe the quota system is based on 33% rule. If a community has 33% population in a constituency it is eligible for reservation. If you bring quota within quota you are effectively limiting the eligible candidates to contest and create further segregation. Complete distortion of voting process.
I am pretty sure that in 2029 this will again be revisited. This is untenable.
