It really can do transparency, I'm glad to say. Tested it myself, though I had to specifically ask it to maintain the transparency when modifying an image with transparency I provided it in the Sora interface, but it still did it. It's not just the fake transparency checkerboard.

The article mentions this being available on the free tier, although also that it's "rolling out" so...guessing it's not there yet? Doesn't appear to be when testing.

I think this will make a lot of people uncomfortable and anxious about the future. It’s really weird to think our society can be really damaged and different with tools that make things look simple and easy. We’re taking for granted the years of training to become a illustrator, 3D artist, photographer, videographer etc, these tools are just copying without people’s permission and make it look like it’s just simple enough.

It’ll be good if OAI shares the same version/amount of compute allocated to the model during demos to regular users as well. My 4o native image generation sucks a bit keeping consistency and following instructions; notable examples being generating scientific and logical diagrams or flowcharts without small errors and failing to resolve those errors.
