Here is story of the Lovers of Teruel which, according to legend, happened in 1217 in Spain:

Diego and Isabel were in love as childhood playmates, but when they were both at an eligible age to wed, Diego's family had fallen on hard times. Isabel's father, being the most wealthy in all of Teruel, forbade the marriage. Diego, however, was able to make an agreement with the father in which he would leave Teruel for five years to try to build his fortune.

During those five years Isabel's father pestered her to marry someone. She replied to him by saying that God wished her to remain a virgin until she turned twenty, and for five years they waited for Diego's return.

Diego was not heard from in those five years and so on the day of the five years' close Isabel's father married her to Don Pedro de Azagra from Albarracín. Right after the wedding ceremony Diego Marcilla returned with great riches and with the intent of marrying Isabel. Diego had not counted the day in which he petitioned Isabel's father whereas the his father had.

That night, Diego sneaked into the bedroom of Isabel and her husband and gently awoke her. He pleaded to her, "Bésame, que me muero, " ("Kiss me for I am dying") and she refused, saying "No quiera Dios que yo falte a mi marido, " ("God would not wish me to deceive my husband") and "For the love of Christ, I beg you to find another, and forget about me. If our love could not please God, then neither should it please me."

He begged her one last time, saying that he was dying and wished for a final kiss. But still she refused. Upon hearing this Diego could not bear the separation between himself and his love, and with a sigh he died on the feet of his beloved Isabel. When she realized that he died, she shivered. She woke her husband and she told him the story of Diego and how he lay dead beside the bed.

"Oh, you wretched! Why did you not kiss him?"

"To not deceive my husband." She replied.

"Of course, " he groaned. "You are a woman worthy of praise."

They agreed on secretly burying him in the local church because the husband feared that he would be blamed for his death. The next day, during the funeral for Diego Marcilla, Isabel showed up dressed in her wedding dress. She proceeded to walk to the front of the church and place a kiss on the man whom she had refused but in doing so Isabel died, falling prostrate on the body of the man whom she loved.

This painting gives meaning... Swans also die from heartbreak.
Edit: Why are yall so confused? Mae told in a reply that they died of heartbreak and grief, that's why I wrote this comment so that I can connect humans to swans. Not tell that humans are swans I realised that it's of poison on Leo's lips so that Isabel can die as well. But, I can still connect this as after a swan's mate dies, they die shortly after. Like Leo died then Isabel died shortly after.

There's a saying in Spain about them. “The lovers of Teruel; she a fool, he a fool”.

You'd think he'd keep her updated on the whole wealth building thing so she could at least tell the father to get bent..

He laced his lips with poison, and wanted her to kiss him so they could die together. The poison killed him, not the heartbreak (though I'm sure that would have eventually killed him). When she kissed him upon his death, she unknowingly tasted the poison and died instantly.
Not so romantic or much of a love story when you consider this detail.

Broken Heart Syndrome is a real thing. When a human is so distraught they can potentially rupture some of the tissue in their heart & it will stop beating. Its exactly why elder partners often pass so close between the other.

My mother’s marriage to my father was an arranged marriage. One clown from my tribe killed a woman her age (18) from my father’s tribe. War was about to break out because the victim was the chiefs daughter. My mum was also the chiefs daughter. So to stop war and people dying they had to marry. 40yrs and 4kids later here I am.
Arranged marriages will end with my generation. Stuff that. My dad has passed now. But my mum didn’t really get to experience love like I did. That makes me sad. But today’s she’s a medical doctor. Warrior spirit. ❤

Edit: sorry guys, my dad was the Nephew of our enemy tribe. We’ve also made peace with our enemy tribes. The younger generations now have never experienced tribal war. I think that’s probably the first time in our history since we left Africa to migrate to the pacific.

Their bodies were later discovered in the ruins of a church in that area. The bodies believed to be there anyway; they are now buried side by side with statues holding hands. I think you can even visit their tomb.

Dying from a broken heart is one of the most tragic things. I sadly never met either of them, but that is how my grandfather died, it was only a few months after my grandmother died of breast cancer. He died on her birthday.

He worked so hard for her; lived for her. Without her, what is it all worth? Nothing. My heart would drop, shatter, and refuse to beat again as well... 😢

Oh no... I can't with these ancient paintings. They make me curious, sad, broken, happy and sometimes really uncomfortable. They give every type of emotion. This is amazing as well as really heartbreaking. To love in the ancient seems so hard, it's like a sin and now you are trapped in it 😭
