Hello everyone and welcome back to my channel! This week I am broaching a topic that so many of you have asked to see featured on my channel: How to Become an Interior Designer. Though there are many routes to take when it comes to becoming an interior designer, in this video I list a couple of key ways to aid your journey and to advance your interior design career. One route to go is getting your Bachelors’ Degree in Interior Design at specific schools like RISD or Parsons, but you can also get your Bachelors’ in any major relating to the arts, like me! Furthermore, I would urge you to consider going to business school and doing additional research on interior design in any way that you can. Make sure you are always collecting photos that inspire you and taking note of those that help you pick your defining style for interior design! Another helpful thing you can do is market yourself and your services online––this helps to show clients not only your style but also the work that you’ve done. Some interior designers also like to get their NICD Certification––taking this exam is not imperative to your interior design career, but it may help you get access to exclusive locations to source items for your projects. First and foremost when starting an interior design career without an academic background in this particular field, I always advise people to learn SketchUp and CAD, and to offer their services pro-bono! This way you get experience, and you are able to work on another key element of your career: building a portfolio. After you’ve put in the work, it’s time to decide on your rate and how much to charge clients. After that, you must stay organized, and just be confident! There is always a market for your style and eye, so trust yourself and your interior design abilities! Thanks so much for tuning in, I will see you all next week with a brand new video!

To get the NCIDQ certification you need to have 2-3 years of verified work experience so probably won't be the first thing you do but it does sound like a smart move.

Great video, Nina. I have become accustomed to high quality on your channel and you never disappoint, so kudos to you and your team. I especially appreciate today's subject because people often tell me I have a "good eye" for design and I enjoy it tremendously, but it's not something I thought I could pursue at this point in my life given that I am no longer twenty-something and I lack formal training. However, your message has encouraged me to seriously study the matter to see what might be possible for me in this field at this stage in my life. So from one artsy Virgo to another, thanks for inspiring me to take the first few baby steps on a new journey. Very much appreciated!

Excellent presentation, Nina! I have loved interior decorating since I was about 10 yrs old. Devoured every shelter magazine I could get my hands on! I’ve only done my own homes but have loved every minute of it. If I were to pick a style I would say my tastes come close to yours. You have exquisite taste! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and helping the younger ones pursue their dreams! Mandy from Tucson 🌵
