I did basically the same in my home, but I kept the original physical switch and put a smart wifi module underneath in the back box, and made an automation in smartlife just like you did. The module isn't connected to anything as well, it just puts all smart switches and bulbs on or off in my apartment, like a killer switch. Very handy, especially since the Mrs doesn't like talking to Google. !

This is seriously dangerous for anyone else other than you changing the light bulb. They'll turn it off, the light will go off and they'll think that there is no power to the ceiling pendent. Please don't advise people to do this.

Good idea, but the only problem I can see is that people wouldn't be aware that the ceiling rose was permanently live. That might be a problem for people changing the bulbs. Firstly not realising that you have to use a smart bulb, secondly not being aware that you'd have to be much more careful with a permanently live outlet. It's not unknown for people to mess around with wiring assuming the rose is isolated by turning off the switch. I'm guessing that for these reasons this might not be strictly acceptable in terms of code.

nice idea if you want to use neutral for the switch.
If I did this I would put another mini smart box in the ceiling fixture so I can control any bulb, it would work the same way

Thank you for this video. I have smart switches and smart bulbs and have been looking for a way to use them together. You just solved my problem. Unfortunately whoever wired up my house originally used red for live and switch live with no sleeving so now I need to do some testing to see which is which.

I LIKE the 3 button switch idea. I could make the bottom button the "Dad button". It would trigger a scene to turn off all the lights in the house when leaving. Dad level 1000!

Good idea. Instead of replacing with 1 Gang, get the 3 Gangs. Just paying a little extra anyway. Can use the extra 2 switches for future use.

Great video and great idea. I’ve been thinking about similar control via zigbee switches for a while now. Although I’m just looking at the possibility of using additional buttons to control other devices in the room. This confirms that that would be possible. I also like the neutral wire solution although I’m lucky enough to have a neutral wire. Great video, would love to see more content like this! 👍💪

I am an electrician. 20 odd years. There is nothing wrong with this. All wires are correctly identified which is the important thing. My only concern is that when your Internet... nevermind you just said that. Its WiFi dependent. I believe that home assistant would solve this.
