Okay people, I've noticed a few of you seem to be in favor of banning trains. This seems like a joke to me, but just incase some of you really do hold that sentiment, let me tell you why it's a bad idea. Trains have been an integral part of the United States ever since the completion of the transcontinental railroad back in 1869! Trains used to be responsible for transporting the larger portion of freight in the country, and to this day still transport a considerable portion. Not everything can be transported by truck. Certain materials are almost exclusively transported by rail because of how the distribution process is set up and how efficient it is compared to anything else. Trains are going nowhere.

This sort of thing should not happen in this day and age.

at this point, crossings should have walls come out of the ground on both sides to prevent idiots from trying to cross when a train is coming.

Amtrak says that it is not cost effective to put gates and warning lights up at some rural crossings. We will see how cost effective the lawsuits are here.

Oh no! I take Amtrak regularly. I can’t imagine how hard this was to go through for the passengers. Big hugs to all of you.

So sad. This is a pretty safe way to travel most of the time. But anything is possible. I have taken the Heartland Flyer Amtrak from OKC to fort worth 4 or 5times in the last 7 months. My prayers are with them..

Americans should be mad about fixing our infrastructure, not CRT and Trans people. People say life is sacred but don't want to up keep bridges, roads and tracks which kills innocent people every year.

Amtrak and BNSF are 0% responsible. 100% of the fault is on the truck driver. Yet he will never know the enormity of what he did.

One witness to the crash told authorities that the innocent truck driver was patiently
waiting at the street crossing when the engineer intentionally swerved to hit the truck.

So you're telling me that the driver of a dump truck either:
1) tried to beat the train in an inherently slow vehicle
or
2) was stuck on the tracks and couldn't get out in time

I think the more likely answer is suicide.

I ride Amtrak several times a month, and I always try to get a seat near the middle of the train, to be as safe as possible.

Dump truck company will be out of business on this one.

Passenger rail needs their own dedicated tracks, elevated or lower than street level.

The same exact thing happened in Brentwood killing 3 people in a car crossing tracks when an Amtrak struck them. Same day? Wow

It is not Amtrak’s fault, it was the truck driver’s. He thought he could beat the train, and now 3 people are dead.

Bring back trains! I enjoy traveling on trains. They're a part of American history and culture. Very scenic and relaxing, as well as meeting passengers, and socializing. More people die in car wrecks. And they recently completed the PTC computerized system to keep trains from derailing. But this sounded like an obstruction on the tracks that the PTC wouldn't detect.
