In Japanese culture, it’s perfectly okay to slurp. It shows how much you appreciate the cooking. Stabbing one’s rice bowl with chopsticks is considered bad luck, since that is done at someone’s altar during a funeral.

Every time I go out to eat Japanese food with my friends, I usually get a noodle dish like Soba, Ramen or Udon just so I can slurp. Of course, before the meal begins I always warn them that I'm going to slurp with gusto! 😄
