I have a tascam 388 does that count as a console?

I usually agree with everything Andrew says, but you don't NEED a mixing console to have a great PRE (and thus make a great recording). A console is a summing device, with all the necessary tools to make a record in the analog world, it was made to cover a need. But music is not made in the analog world anymore, because we have so many more tools, affordable, portable, practical, convenient tools. So depending on what you are recording, a console is very much an optional choice. You probably won't be recording a full live orchestra, or a live jazz band without a console. But you can definitely record a single instrument (even drums), without a console and have it sound just as good, if not better.
