Barely two weeks after the National Cancer Taskforce tabled a report recommending the capping of cancer treatment costs to enhance accessibility, thousands of Kenyans are dealing with the financial burden of cancer. In Nyamira, a 51-year-old woman has been forced to use regular pain killers to manage the pain, after one of her breasts fell off, leaving a gushing wound that has cost her, her health and her dignity. Cancer treatment and management remains a pipe dream for thousands of patients in Kenya, despite huge investments in medical equipment.
