Thanks for this video.  I'm sure you saved my house from burning down.  I decided to install a switch before the line runs into the fuse.
898D+ soldering station repair

I have recently obtained one of the 852D+ clones and although shipped from within the UK the eBay seller is registered in China. Checked it over and there are a few glaring safety issues, the plug is unfused and the fuse at the rear of the station is in the neutral wire. In addition the metal barrel of the hot-air wand is not earthed. Reading about the meltdown of your hot-air wand, I was thinking about the possibility of fitting a thermal fuse in the handle of the wand near to where the barrel attaches, so in the event of a meltdown the power would be cut to the heating element before it melts the handle and starts a fire. Other possible mods apart from replacing the mains plug with an approved one and rewiring the fuse are an illuminated double pole mains switch to cut power as the transformer is still powered with the front switches in the off positions.

if you bother to chekk the heating assembly i think you will find it is shorted out to the metal chasing/that should be grounded to the mains.seen some fail do to fragile insulation between heating element and the metal case around it

Tell me, please, which is connected to the yellow wire 6:10
In my version of the station, only soldered capacitor, but this is not the wires.

That's not good, I have same one as you Daz. trouble is we leave them on while we work and that is not a bad thing because the device should be safe like that. But its not in your case. I would contact them, and let them see your video, they will send you another unit.

Just came across your video after watching random electronics repair videos on you tube. After seeing this although mines not a Yihua, nor an 898D but it is a chinese cheapy, so it now gets unplugged from the socket when not in use.

My unit was blowing smoke out. I opened the hot air gun but did not see anything fundamentally wrong. Then plug it back in and it works.

I bought a (Saike 852D) 2 months ago every thing worked fine for about 15 min, the the fan stopped working then ( it smells burned ). not getting any good help from where I bought it ( China ) anyways I checked the voltage up to fan motor it reads 42 dc volts but motor is rated 24 dc volts I think it's burned out. Question, where on the board do I look thats causing this problem ? Has anybody had this problem with this unit or similar ? Thanks

Well shoot, thanks for the heads up! I have the Maxtra 898D and it's been working perfect since December... Just took the front off and what do you know? Exactly the same board, YH898DV12.

Checked the resistors next to the optocoupler, 330ohm is reading 337ohm, the 360ohm is reading 27ohm and the little resistor bridging over the mains is also discoloured. It should read 120k according to the silk screening but my meter won't even get a reading, keeps going infinite as I move up to higher resistance settings on the meter...

I shall keep a close eye on this, it's served me well so far...

Do you think it's a design oversight that they did not put a main power on/off switch on the back of that model?

Update: Just watched the other "tear-down" video you have done on this and noticed a HUGE difference in wiring.
I haven't got a power switch on the back of the unit. Instead my two rocker switches at the front are double pole which also isolates power (although initially neutral as mentioned) as well as the station when switched off so this would not have happened if yours was wired like mine which is also a 898D+. Enjoyed watching them both also.

Thats a wise move Tim If it had of been on with no one there it could of caused a fire.
