The Pixel Fold is Google’s super-sleek take on a big flexible phone

Today at Google I/O 2023, Google finally announced its first foldable phone: the Pixel Fold. Unlike Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold line, the Pixel Fold sports a wider 5.8-inch exterior screen with a 17.4:9 aspect ratio, which makes it feel like a more full-featured device before you ever open it up. Meanwhile on the inside, there’s a big 7.6-inch interior display along with IP67 water resistance and a super sleek design that measures less than 6mm thick. And around back there’s a big rear camera module with a 5x optical zoom, just like on the Pixel 7 Pro. So even though this is Google’s first device with a flexible display, it doesn’t feel like a first-gen gadget. However, the big downside is that with prices starting at $1,800 (pre-orders go live today on May 10th), it definitely ain’t cheap.

Man Google has no business. Making a first gen fold this good. They really stepped up their hardware game I could tell and it's only going to continue to get better. It's time to start believing Google when they said that they were going to really push on their hardware side of things and software too because the pixel fold has a lot of software features that basically no other fault has right now. So that's impressive. I really didn't think that Google was going to pull this off and I'm still been using my Pixel watch since launch and honestly it works like a charm. I got no complaints about it. Battery life is actually surprising. Gotten really good so that's impressive. I used to be able to barely get through the whole day and now I get through the whole day and I get home and I still got 40 to 50% battery left which is really surprising especially for a first gen product again. Google really really has stepped up their hardware game and I think that in a couple of years they're going to be a dominant force in the mobile market

The more I see the Pixel Fold, the more I like it. Would get it in white as I enjoyed the silver iPhone X I had with a clear case before selling it after 3 months because battery life was so bad. I need to wait another 6 months to get the Pixel Fold at half the price or so. No way I'm paying $1, 800 for this. I'm still paying off my Flip 3 from 2 years ago for another year.

Google needs to push for trade-in deals. The reason I like it is because it's small when closed like a Find N and N2. The big bezels don't really bother me. I'm hoping Zvelsiem makes a faux leather case for it. Covers the hinge completely. I really enjoy the feel of their cases. They're usually out of stock with their Z Fold/Flip cases.

On AT&T, they're very selective with which phones working on their 5G network, so I can't import an Oppo Find N2 or vivo X Flip. My only foldable choices are really from Samsung and maybe Motorola. At least Pixel Fold offers a different alternative for those who don't want Samsung. This is really what the Surface Duo 1 and 2 should've been.

This Pixel Fold was delayed for nearly 2 years. It was supposed to come out in late-2021 but Google focused pushing the Pixel 6 series more. I guess it was worth the wait like Top Gun: Maverick.

YouTube still fails to dynamically adjust the UI from mobile to tablet when starting on a cover display then moving to the inside. This is a different issue from flex mode. You need to force restart YouTube on the inner display to get the proper tablet UI.

I don’t own either foldable phones but even with the larger bezels, I would still go with the pixel fold. The samsung is just so unnecessarily tall and the galaxy android os is visually unappealing

The only thing I worry about is whether Nova will work decently... I'll find out by July...Wish it shipped sooner.

I would like to see how it holds up to the drop my phone took today three times . . They weren't butter fingers drops either . Just the normal stupid things that happen at the worst possible moments .

Man this is such a good foldables. I just hope developers optimise their apps to be more cohesive for large foldable display.

At $1800 they need to guarantee more than 3 years of version updates.

Will it have a proper tv out mode? I saw them using it on stage but it looks to be some sort of adapter or so as the casting icon was on screen. At $1, 800 it should be near perfect so.

I think I will want it if they knock the cost down for black friday or christmas and still include a free pixel watch. This would allow it time to get software updates and see how it performs in real life for people. I thought I was a day 1 person, but I backed away when they took my pixel 6 pro trade in value from $500+ just a few days ago down to around $225. Not cool Google.

tensor G2 is a mid-range SoC in 2022, goole apps are well optimized for it but 3rd-party apps and games are not. the acceptable price is below 1400USD.

i think they'll kill it on software side ... but hardware-wise... it kinda looks a bit worse than the fold to me

Absolutely love the Pixel Fold but my only concern is overheating. My pixel 7 pro dramatically overheats and throttles performance when multitasking especially with video chatting so I'm concerned with the fold having a much bigger display and the same processor how it will handle all the multi-tasking it's designed for. I'm intrigued to see how the full reviews and feedback turn out and how much of a step down the camera will be because that's another thing that holds me back from getting a folding device. If the cameras are close enough to my 7 pro and if it doesn't have drastic overheating problems then I'm 100% switching to the Fold from my Pixel 7 Pro.

What's the weight? I've been using Galaxy fold 2 for 3 yrs, heavy weight is a real challenge for daily uses, especially when you watch things on bed.
