Original Air Date - 9/28/23
Yascha Mounk, author of The Identity Trap: A Story of Ideas and Power In Our Time, sits down with Bridget to discuss the rise of a set of ideas about race, gender, and sexual orientation in the last 10 years that have changed the world. They talk about his worries over getting cancelled for writing the book, how the topic is slightly less controversial than it was 12 months ago, why the stakes are very high, how separating kids at school based on race will probably result in more racism not less, the truth about the Covid vaccine distribution, the allure of the identity trap and why it is counterproductive. They also cover the danger of being reactionary when your own side turns on you, why we need to construct our own understanding of opposing racism and operate from the point of view of our own principles and ideals, being accused of both-sidesism, the cultural appropriation debate, why we’re going to be in this fight for the next 20 to 25 years, Yascha's definition of "woke," and how writing the book has given him greater clarity for how to articulate his own ideals.

I'm skeptical of this author's ideas since he just wrote a big hit-piece in the NYT about Bret Weinstein.

I'm an older Gen-X woman, and I recall hearing the beginnings of what is now called 'woke-ism' in college in the 1980s. I recall both Biden and Trump being loudmouthed BS artists I'd wish would go away. And I recall the Right, not Left, being the more intolerant and moralistic of the 2 parties. The ideology, the phoney moralism and hypocrisy and these 2 repeat offenders are now all over 30 years past their shelf life. A choice between deranged and demented is not a choice! I don't want Left OR Right authoritarianism and moral superiority! I've now started to identify myself as Politically Homeless both online and offline.

PS: At the end of your WiW today was an ad from Biden campaign for $. Where is the algorithm when we need it? Broken! Please keep feeding the algorithm with your original takes!

He seems to be holding onto the general disdain of the populous by members of the academic & media worlds that limit their ability to conduct effective critical analysis.

I'm skeptical of people that don't understand populism and that straw man their arguments and support bureaucracies, all nations fail under their own regulatory shift to aristocracies, many turn toward populists/populism and do so too late, the last-ditch collapse is blamed on the symptom and not the disease.

Thanks Phetasy family! Although I don't always agree with a guest, I appreciate that you are having these conversations. I have always been taught that many opinions are necessary to resolve life's complex ideas which stem from all human beings. Keep up the good fight; and never let others destroy your curiosity.

This is a deep conversation which I will have to listen to again when I have nothing to do.

Mr Mounk seems confused as why anyone could prefer Trump to Biden. Well if Trump were President gas would be two dollars a gallon and Putin would NOT be in Ukraine. Hey, here might be another reason. Poor and lower middle class Americans would like to be able to afford food. How about a reasonably secure border? Could that maybe be a reason?

I will always be a part of the Phetasy family because you are awesome but this guest is deeply foolish in his thinking. Has MANY MANY blind spots.
