In December 2019, the Australian Institute of Marine Science and the Woppaburra Traditional Owners of the Keppel Islands and surrounding sea country began a partnership to map traditional and scientific knowledge of the marine environment and bring new skills to the region.

Traditional Owners from six Woppaburra families returned to North Keppel Island (Konomie) for a workshop to share knowledge, and guide AIMS scientists to identify and document areas of special significance and discuss ideas for future research in the area. For some of the Traditional Owners, especially the younger family members, this was their first time on-country.

It was great to hear the Traditional Owners perspective and commitment to the care of country. Truly inspiring to see a glimpse into these projects and the cultural values of the Woppaburra people.
