Episode 96

This time on THE IDENT REVIEW, we pay our respects to one of the most established satellite channels, that has kept us entertained for nearly 40 years. With the announcement that it will be replaced in September, we look back on several idents from the long history, of SKY ONE!

Launching as Satellite Television in 1982, Sky made its way to the UK in 1983, before gaining the Sky Channel moniker in 1984. After renaming itself to Sky One in 1989, the channel and Sky Network as a whole really began to expand in popularity. Hosting several shows that had long been American exclusives, and providing viewers with high-quality entertainment. But in 2021, Sky One is to be retired for the brand new Sky Showcase. So join me, as we look at a wide selection of nearly 40 years worth of Sky One idents...

I remember when Cablelink started carrying Sky One (along with Super Channel and a few other weird ones) in Ireland back around 1991/92 when I was about 10 years old. It felt so futuristic and world-bridging...

So long, Sky One. I’ll always remember watching The Simpsons on you. That new channel has potential, yet some may clammer for your return. We bid you goodnight.

Nothing will ever beat the 1989-1992 idents. The style and the music made you want to be part of the SKY ONE world.

I remember the 2004 idents getting panned by some critics due to the logo design. "Is it Sky One or Sky Onc?" was one of them.

The 90s disappear further into history. If you ever saw a Sky One ident then, or a Simpsons episode not on BBC, either your parents were loaded or for those of us in NI you were visiting a relative or otherwise on holiday in the Republic, and were watching on cable. The week's holiday in Dublin every year for me meant watching Sky One with breakfast! How exotic! I remember watching Blockbusters on the channel one year when arriving at the caravan park.

Amazing idents, a window into an alien world across the Atlantic, and sometimes the Pacific, too (Australia), and one of the biggest reasons why The Simpsons has lasted as long as it has. Truly the end of a TV era. Sky One. Take a bow.

Another stellar episode pal! It's a shame to see Sky One go really, I can't see its successor doing anything remotely as good in terms of style, but I'm welcome to be surprised.

In terms of these idents, I mean I very much have vivid memories of seeing the 2002 style in my youth (mainly thanks to childhood hype surrounding the 300th episode of the Simpsons lmao) but I don't think anything really tops the Tombstones looking back. For the modern era though, definitely the first "1" in 2008 too, those were awesome. Never gelled with the current idents at all.

But yeah. RIP Sky One. Been a privilege knowing ya.

Fun Fact: The last 2008 Sky One idents shown (the one where the man is floating wrapped in pieces of the 1) is actually an ident themed of the American tv show “LOST”. That guy is one of the characters from the show, and the 1 is in place of the big reactor from the show bunker!

Fab ident review as always Adam! I first got Sky in ‘95, so I never saw anything before the tombstones. Shocked that they’re getting rid of Sky 1 ☹️. I hope someone uploads the closure.

It’s a shame Sky One is going away, but as the saying goes “This too shall pass.” Everything will have a start and an end. At least it existed, and that’s what’s most important. I hope Sky finds success with their use of what’s essentially category channels as instead of a traditional channel. I hope someone records the channels final moments as well, that’s valuable history XD

Rest well, Sky One. You’ll definitely be remembered by millions.

I'll definetily miss Sky One because it was the only channel where I'd sit down and watch The Simpsons or Futurama. Great review, as always. One day, I want to make an ident review show just like this(im obbsessed with idents). RIP Sky One (1982-2021)

8:42 - it's the ident equivalent of the "how do you do, fellow kids" meme.

I'll miss Sky One/1 so much this is where I watched An Idiot Abroad and The Simpsons for the first time and I've never laughed so much in my life

Back in the 90s when I was in high school, I always felt lucky that my family had Sky One as it would show TV shows months before they broadcast on terrestrial TV like friends, i felt i was ahead of the game and loved satellite TV. Now decades on, I feel sky channels and TV channels in general are just old and nothing like streaming today. When I see TV channels, it feels like so old school.

Being an avid viewer of the Simpsons (starting off in 2020) I saw the domino Sky One ident every single time it was about to start, it was literally the only one I could remember. And though I thought I'd get really tired of it, the SFX used is appealing and cosy, especially considering what would pop up next.

Good Ident Review episode, Adam! It was very interesting to see ident batches I've really never seen before and your thoughts on it. Sad that Sky One is being phased out soon, even if it didn't need to be.

The Tombstone style was from before we got Sky in my house but it does remind me of going round my neighbors to watch the channel or when I was on holiday that had a ‘TV room’

The ‘dish’ logo and the square logo of the 90s are my eras. Haven’t lived in a house with Sky in since 2011 ish though so don’t have much nostalgia for the others.

Looking at all of these I definitely prefer where the ‘one’ is written rather than the numeral.

*AMAZING* Ident Review once again!

Do you know what? Those Sky One idents are really brilliant, especially the 1989 ident! And... oh my god, this is probably one of - if not - _the longest Ident Review you've ever did!_ (Along with VPRO Idents!) I even can't pick a favourite ident out of Sky One, but I guess it would probably be the 1989 ident, as the graphics and animation are very good for the time. And... wait. WHAT?! Sky One will be retired and get replaced with Sky Showcase?!

🌎 *No!*

That's a very big shame indeed! I can't believe that Sky One will get retired! The other Sky UK channels like Sky Two and Sky Three also got rebranded! This is so sad! Rest in peace to Sky Channel/Sky One (1984-2021)!

These take me back. My family didn't get Sky until 1996 so the Tombstone ident (and its variants for the other Sky channels) will always be my favourite. I watched so much Star Trek during that time. The 1998 ident just makes me think of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Friends.

The Little alien ident I loved but it didn't seem very Sky when you compare it to others. I loved 2008 🥳🥳🥳🥳 Great video my love ❤❤❤
