Periphery Lesson (...but not really)

Periphery riffs are intricate and a lot of fun to play. Misha and Co. do a great job of incorporating a lot of tasteful and complex musical ideas which in the end equal some of the best riffs in the industry. Have a Blast is a great example of this. This is an analysis of this riff and some of the concepts that are found within it as well as the things that I find interesting. This lesson probably isn't what you want or hope it to be but you'll be better after it :)

If you scroll through the comments several people have pointed that out but I've read several interviews with Misha where he talks about the Buttersnips riff as if he wrote it.

I was planning to do something similar to this with AAL. Going over commonly used chords and whatnot.

Karnivool is such a great band, I'm so glad I stumbled upon them. Great videos by the way man, I love your stuff and you're a natural at teaching !

Thanks! I mentioned that I would be discussing the chords as if I was in standard tuning (drop D) rather than the actual detuning.

Thanks for breaking down the harmonic structure of this particular riff! I really enjoyed hearing the theory and what (as a guitar player) you liked about it.

Great elaboration on the riff section! But I like the later part where you showed us how we can put the idea into our own writing in the near future. Great vid!

I've been digging the new(est) Contortionist album Intrinsic. It's fantastic. Karnivool has a new album coming out soon as well. If your not familiar with them I'd definitely check them out.

Really dig this lesson.
It's given me a few ideas on developing a chord progression I'm really digging.
Hopefully it'll be good enough to share.
Keep up the good work!

Awesome as always! I would really like if you could check up on some Monuments or older Contortionist songs! Ex. Monuments - 97% Static or The Contortionist - Flourish!

Also would like to hear some of your ideas and guidelines with arranging and composing in that kind of genre.

Thank you!

Have A Blast is my favorite Periphery song. Great example of good musicianship that sounds fun too.

You should discuss some of the concepts Blotted Science uses. Ron has a few vids but they are really hard to understand and you usually explain these things with a lot more clarity.
