When I got lost in a Maryland forest years ago, I saw some deer watching me from among the trees. I wouldn’t have been freaked out under normal conditions, but being lost added a whole new dimension of fear to seeing any animals.

A lot of these stories sound really similar to a description of a deer in the final stages of CWD. Their brains basically just liquefy in their skulls and their behavior gets really unsettling and erratic. They stare off into space, stop socializing with other deer, become progressively uncoordinated, lose their fear of humans, etc.
If you come across a deer behaving strangely, contact wildlife authorities asap. CWD can spread to humans via tainted venison, so it’s important that folks know if the deer in their area are potentially vectors for it.

Never heard this tale before, but I had a nightmare as a child about a "not-deer". Extremely spooky

I'm probably going to get hate for this, but still. I personally don't think Not Deer are this deep seated lore like a lot of people believe. I'm an avid fan of cryptids, but I think this one is literally just a story started by someone online after seeing some weird deer. I remember seeing stories pop up after the Wendigo/Skinwalker craze had ebbed a bit (4-5 years ago)

Deer can catch wasting disease that alters their behaviour greatly. Congenital deformities can happen, mating injuries can likewise happen (broken necks, missing horns, chunks taken out of the face, leg or body) and yes, the deer can live after these injuries and deformities. Deer also eat meat and bones to replenish minerals that their usual diet can't give them (as do cows and other herbivores). Deer can also walk on their hind legs for short distances, usually to make themselves look bigger when they are threatened.

So I think Not Deer are just normal deer and someone witnessed abnormal behaviour.

I wonder if it's related to Chronic Wasting Disease, a prion disease that's been going through the wild deer population. It eats away at the brain, so that might explain some weird movements and behavior.

As someone who lives on the Kentucky/Tennessee border I’ve heard a lot of sightings mostly from family members who have lived in the hills their entire lives swearing they saw the not deer and went straight back home after seeing it

I can't speak of not deers, but let me tell you there are some strange things running and flying around in the dark in the state of Tennessee...no doubt. My husband is a native of this state, and we both have seen some crazy stuff that can't be explained. My advise is never go out at night in the woods without being armed.

This is the best presentation of SCP-6448 I’ve seen so far. You almost had me believing it. Almost.

Really great video and have heard of those not deer but never really seen a video about it. Really informative.
And yes the supernatural is real and exist. Had several encounters and even in ministry too. No one should dismiss it

I just gotta say this video pops up in my fyp every couple of days, sometimes multiple days in a row.
Then, sometimes, multiple times after refreshing my page.
The worst part is it's every time at night.
So, with my fyp being vtubers, robotics, and occasional gameplay, it scares the shit out of me with that thumbnail.

The idea of a deer with predatory eyes just casually moving out of the road for you then STANDING AT THE BOTTOM OF A 40FT DROP OFF WITH ITS HEAD POKING UP, WATCHING, messes me up

My best guesses are they are malevolent spirits using the corpses of deer to frighten people or shapeshifting fae trying to frighten people. Or possibly even a shapeshifting native witch trying to frighten people.

You know deer have been known to eat meat from time to time, I personally have seen a buck eat a small bird before.

I'm curious if accounts of these not-deer are primarily from people who are not native to the Appalachians themselves. I grew up in Michigan, and recently moved to the Appalachians (West Virginia), and the deer here are definitely different than deer I was accustomed to growing up. (Never been a hunter, so I have no idea if they are a separate species or genus or if the differences are just down to genetic differences in local breeding populations.)

The deer I see here (and there are many), differ both physically and behaviorally from the deer I'd see in Michigan. Most notable (to me) is the deer here seem to dispaly both 1. less skittishness around humans, and 2. more intelligent in avoiding danger. (Which, I suppose, is somewhat contradictory.)

While this wouldn't account for all the traits not-deer are said to have, it may account for many sightings. I can definitely see how someone used to different deer populations coming her and seeing a local one and concluding "that deer ain't right."
