In this video Bluffmunkey looks at latency, what it is, why it's a problem and how to solve it.

Latency from a general point of view is a time delay between the cause and the effect of some physical change in the system being observed. Also known as "lag", latency is a time interval between the input to a simulation and the visual or auditory response. For example, the time it takes for you to hear a sound after you press a note on a MIDI Keyboard.

Really useful info. I’d given up on my pc and only used my Mac but I think I’ll revisit it and have another try.

You can set one audio channel for playing midi (check monitor in or set it to AUTO), and another audio channel set to monitor (OFF). On both channel arm recording is switched on.
Audio channel with monitor OFF will record with 0 latency. Am i right?

Plugins can introduce latency and Daws even with automatic delay compensation just cant keep up. Have enough proQs on linear phase mode and things can get very frustrating.
