I love discovering new pieces from Ravel that I haven’t heard before

The little Borodin piece has always been one of my favorites in Ravel's ouevre, because it so succinctly shows the unusual amount of wit, and precision that he ( Ravel) had.

Incroyable, Maurice Ravel est le plus grand scientifique de la musique !!! On entend si bien Alexandre Borodin, c'est beau !

Is it only me who feels the first Borodine piece sounds so modern/contemporary? I'd legit believe if someone told me that this was written few years ago

I think he pretty much nailed the Borodin sound.

Gorgeous miniatures; all notes precisely in place with no excess. Ravel had a remarkable mind for proportion.

Absolutely gorgeous. Ravel is the master! I love Borodin and the first piece is such a marvellous tribute to him.

Do people recognize the tune of Ravel's Chabrier piece? It's Siebel's aria from Gounod's Faust, "Faites-lui mes aveux, " ingeniously re-worked to include lots of Chabrier's inventive and forward-looking harmonies: slightly tongue-in-cheek, but a genuine tribute from one superb French composer to another. Chabrier is still underrated, and often mislabeled as a composer of "light"music, but Ravel and many other musicians - notably Poulenc, who wrote a book about him - loved his music. :-)

two of my (recently discovered) favourite Ravel pieces...

Here Ravel managers to both satirize and also to applaud the music of Borodine. That's a difficult tightrope to walk. Cudos to Mr. Laplante who give us a superlative performance. (I must add, much later, that this is a simply gorgeous piece of music, and I think Ravel captured something quite wonderful.)

Such great miniatures by Ravel. He manages to pack in a lot in a short time.

I played À la manière de Borodine for an exam one year 20 or 25 years ago : it was a blast, such a lovely piece and very fun to learn and play. It's so "Borodine-esque" that it's hard to believe it's another composer that wrote it ! If you like Borodine, I can advise you to listen the op.6 (Petite Suite), a true gem. (I particularly love the first and the two last pieces of it). I'll play them for sure !

Il avait un talent unique ce Monsieur Ravel. Borodine était à moitié autodidacte, tout comme Moussorgski. Ravel a donné un autre aspect a leur musique en ajoutant qq chose de la subtilité française à leur palette succulente.
