With my close friends we agree in advance.
If someone is ranting about a situation the other will ask "venting or help".
9 5/10 it is venting.
So we don't offer solutions "You should.." "I can do x for you. Never ever say "You should've"
If it's "vent" we listen, unless asked directly (or implied) for an opinion.
DONT SAY; "I would have.." "Why didn't you. " "Next time you should.." "Can't you tell ...(boss, cops, spouse etc) "
