Caution to anyone watching, this is NOT how you install a drain. Install the tub FIRST, otherwise you are asking for trouble.

The author stated: "there was no access to install the drain after". If this is the case, then he should have used a GLUED assembly, not slip-joint compression fittings. How will he tighten those fittings if there was a small leak after installing the tub? There is a reason that codes do not allow for slip-joint fittings when there is "no access".

Make an access and install the tub first. If you are in a pinch and you have no way to make an access panel, another option is to cut a small opening from the ceiling below in which you will patch after the tub has been tested for leaks. In this case you would use glued fittings, not slip-joint. Either way, the tub goes in first.

oh never mind. I see from the video that the one piece can adjust in or out to line up with the drain, so it doesn't matter. I'm working on my bathroom. Thanks for the video!

How many inches away from framing does the drain need to be? I believe for a toilet is 15" from the wall but how much for a tub?

Always set your tub first. Then connect your waste and overflow. This video is how NOT to do it.

I'm faced with a similar situation. I can't create an access panel, so I have to get the drain lines glued up before tub installation. It's a hassle, but not insurmountable. I'll just be dry fitting the tub in pretty carefully to get measurements as close as possible. Any insightful hints on doing this? Thanks.

Definitely not how you properly install a drain rough in, The tub goes in first to prevent damaging connections and I am not a big fan of having threaded fittings in sealed off areas.

Is that diameter adequate enough to drain the waste water?

This was a condo w no access behind or under. I had a 3.5" gap in the wall to reach down and tighten the fittings. It's a tight fit but everything is properly installed.
