Livestock Guardian Dog: our maremma sheepdog puppy overview

Ozai is our Maremma sheepdog puppy. We are raising him a in a non-traditional fashion but we're trusting in his instincts that he'll tell us when he's ready to stay guarding the herd full time.

We have been bringing him out with us to do chores, allowing him to spend time outside and providing supervised time with the goats. This breed is meant to protect their livestock and most do not do well in a home setting in the long term. They have a deep drive to do their job of living amongst the creatures they protect. We also want him to learn what it is do be a an inside dog so if he ever needs to be inside (injury, surgery, retired etc) he understands the concepts of what that looks like.

The Maremma is the Italian version of the Kuvasz. A most interesting breed. We've had two, but did not give them the guarding herd task. Protective instinct? Oh, yes.
