I’m from the UK; I live elsewhere now, but Brexit is an interesting parallel here. The whole argument behind Brexit was essentially the same as MAGA; we’re better by ourselves, secure the border, chuck out the immigrants. Etc.
What happened after Brexit is that the UK fell in to a bigger hole. British business suffered terribly. Exports reduced. Imports became stifled with red tape, tariffs and regulatory confusion.
And in spite of all that, immigration to the UK increased, and the Brexit crowd have delivered absolutely none (ZERO) of the promises that were made in referendum campaign. No tangible benefits have been seen at all. In fact, the opposite is true, and the UK is still paying the price for it
