If you put powder in the gun and plug the bayonet, you could technically give a cavalryman a really bad time by pulling the trigger

Bayonets are fascinating, especially how long they lasted, because it was like... at the end of the day, if all else fails, a human wants its pointy stick.

And it's not a sentiment without merit.

The cavalry definitely got the point, they really were on a sharpened edge

History is so cool bra.... it’s just filled with people going “hmm....what can I do?” Then proceeding to do that shit

A bit like forgetting to remove the blank firing attachment if switching from blanks to live rounds.

something the video doesn't mention specifically is that muskets in the days of the plug bayonet were single-fire and were slow to reload so an exploding barrel wasn't really an issue if you first shot a volley into the enemy cavalry before putting the bayonet into the gun

A musket with bayonet is better as a spear that shoots rather than a gun that stabs

Well at least you can get one round off before you plug it up, so it's still better than a pike.

Birth of the bayonet. I wish all US armed forces still practiced with it.

Oh... I was hoping he would say we used to fire these knifes across the fields when we ran out of bullets

what if you just load powder and no ball? can you fire the bayonet in some random direction?

I was watching a YouTube on Bayonets getting shorter after WWI. What they didn't seem to take into account calvary no longer in the field. Bayonets were to make your musket into a pike...

As a comment I saw in another video.
The question is: when did spears start to shoot bullets?

I wonder if someone back then tried to modify their gun to shoot the bayonets just long distance stabbing

Was it just me that thought when he put the bayonet in the musket it was going to be lake a early draft for a bazooka

Nowadays there's little knife under the barrel sometimes
Ive seen a whole god damn wood cutting axe on there
And a literal chainsaw although you'd mostly be shot while trying to turn on that shit
