For the aesthetics, I think a big challenge is balancing readability and art. To me, cube rails games are like the 3-5-player analogs to 2-player combinatorial abstracts. As a point of comparison, many people think Chicago Express (which is often considered the gold standard for cube rails) is too busy in artwork.
