US Hands Over 297 Stolen Antiquities During PM Modi's Visit | Subscribe to Firstpost
The US Government has handed over 297 stolen and trafficked antiquities to India during PM Modi's three-day visit to the country. The antiquities belong to a period spanning from 2000 BCE to 1900 CE. The majority of antiquities are terracotta artefacts from Eastern India. PM Modi said the return strengthens the fight against illicit trafficking of cultural properties. The symbolic handover took place at US President Joe Biden’s home in Delaware. Selected artefacts were showcased to PM Modi and President Biden. In July 2024, India and the US signed the first ever “Cultural Property Agreement” on the sidelines of the 46th World Heritage Committee in New Delhi to prevent the illicit trafficking of artefacts. The US has returned 578 artefacts since 2014. India has also recovered 16 artefacts from the UK & 40 from Australia, taking the total number of recovered antiquities to 640.
