Can Pakistan Beat Its Baloch Insurgency?

Can Pakistan defeat the insurgency in Balochistan? Pakistan’s battle against the Baloch insurgency has escalated to alarming levels, with the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) carrying out one of the deadliest attacks in recent history. In March 2025, BLA militants hijacked a train with over 400 hostages, demanding the release of Baloch political prisoners. The Pakistani government responded with force, ending the siege but at the cost of 27 civilian lives. This attack underscores the enduring and growing challenge posed by the Balochistan insurgency, which has persisted despite decades of military crackdowns. Rooted in deep-seated economic, political, and social grievances, the BLA has proven remarkably resilient, using guerrilla warfare and leveraging Balochistan’s rugged terrain to its advantage. With increasing attacks on military, civilian, and foreign targets—including Chinese investments—Pakistan faces mounting pressure to find a lasting solution.

Beyond domestic security concerns, the insurgency has serious international ramifications. Relations with Afghanistan remain tense, as Islamabad accuses Kabul of harbouring Baloch militants. Likewise, Pakistan blames India for covertly supporting the separatists, adding fuel to long-standing regional hostilities. Meanwhile, Iran faces its own Baloch insurgency, straining diplomatic ties. With Chinese investments in Balochistan at risk, Beijing is growing impatient. Can Pakistan finally overcome this insurgency, or is the conflict set to intensify further?

The Balochistan insurgency is one of Pakistan’s longest-running conflicts. However, the recent BLA attacks suggest it’s becoming an even bigger challenge for the country. So, is Pakistan losing control of the situation? And with tensions rising between Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, and even China, could this conflict spiral into a larger regional crisis? And what do you think Pakistan should do to tackle the problem? As ever, let me know your thoughts and comments below.

Surrounded by Afghanistan, India and Iran and not to be in a good relation with any of these will be detrimental for Pakistan in days ahead.

"Heavy pressure" to join Pakistan? That's an odd way of spelling "military invasion".

Just to mention, professor( from the 400 passengers, 200 hundred were military personnel, and the other 200 hundreds were civilians, which were released by bla themselves, proof( even the released civilians said that the fighters told the civilians, you are not our enemy, our target only military soldiers

Also in the past few years thousands of Baluchi man disappeared and murdered by Punjabi army then people of Baluchistan have the right of self defense.

A well balanced video professor. As a non-Baloch Pakistani, we grew with very little information about the province. However today due to social media, the poverty and resentment present in Balochistan is being felt across the country. Protests by Baloch activist groups have taken place even in the capital and other major cities like Lahore.

One thing to note is that the 200-odd civilians were not rescued by the military. The militants released them right at the start and took only men with ties to the military as hostages.
