The threats arising from the massive SolarWinds hack

When it comes to cyberspace, the United States is the most technologically-advanced nation – and, at the same time, perhaps the most vulnerable to a cybersecurity intrusion. The suspected Russian hacking of software from SolarWinds, a Texas-based IT management company, caused a "cyber virus" that has infected the computer systems of more than 18,000 private and government customers, in the U.S. and abroad. "Sunday Morning" senior correspondent Ted Koppel talked with cybersecurity experts Richard Clarke and Keith Alexander, and New York Times journalist David Sanger, about the national security implications of the breach, and the dangers it poses to critical infrastructure.

This story is alarming and not getting enough media coverage. Grateful CBS is staying on it.

Something that I consistently here from interviewers is that our government and private corporations do not want to commit the monies necessary to protect our interests, and yet, the US government spends trillions of dollars on useless weaponry that enriches shareholders and members of the corporate class. And we have been undone by hackers and American companies who outsource security work to Eastern Europe, make servers available for access on the internet with weak passwords, and do not have dedicated security teams. This government and private industries have no one to blame but themselves. And as is always the case the entire country will pay the price at the hands of Russia, China, Iran, North Korea and any other country with the infrastructure or funds to pay for backdoor access into our technological infrastructure. Missiles, fighter jets, tanks, soldiers, aircraft carriers all a waste of money!

Where is Edward Snowdon in all this? Does he have something to say?
You have to wonder why so many agencies and companies use the very same software suppled by one IT management company. Is there a lesson here?

Interesting. I would have never guessed the hacked code was written in JavaScript.

Think about where computers impact our lives. Cell phones, medical records, ...

"Neither govt nor the private sector can defend our systems alone" - what a load of crap. I worked in medical research and spent a lot of time building in-house systems which, although a bit archaic and took more time/$$ to support, it was definitely MUCH MORE secure than any software derived from somewhere like Seattle, WA (or TX) - half the country away with a lot of "silicon valley" influence. Also, keeping it in-house supported my team and myself, local employees. Around that same time I noticed a lot of other teams/platforms adopting similar "better" systems from outside vendors and my gut told me "this isn't good". And it wasn't, and it still isn't - and this hack is a perfect example of why.

The only secure system is one that is not connected.

I bet they are studying all our systems in preparations to shut it all down at once.

Of course you’d make backdoors, admin/service accounts. Rest assured, there’s a good chance they’ve got access to thousands of systems. Regardless if the solarwinds vulnerability has been fixed.

This hack affected many businesses. They won't admit it when we asked because we saw the problems with the apps. They said everything is fine, but we know the problems are real.

I truly wish someday those who are interviewed about stuff like this will stop referring to the entire Country to which they're blaming. It's not fair to the majority. Maybe state, "threat actors from Russia" or "a group from Russia". The minute I hear anyone make the statement referring to the entire Country, whether Russia and/or China I no longer want to hear any more.
