Common Core 2nd grade math had my head spinning when I sat with my granddaughter while her teachers did virtual instruction during covid shutdowns. It's all over the place and completely confusing for a child. When I showed my granddaughter the basic way to add 2 digit numbers she understood it immediately. Next day she told her teacher "I like the way my Grandma taught me, it makes more sense and it's easier", the teacher replied "we don't want you to do it that way, you have to follow our instructions."

I am a teacher taking a class right now about how to teach my students critical thinking. One of the principles of critical thinking is to question where information is coming from and consider if the source may be biased. So I was wondering if you have any expertise in this field. Usually experts have book shelves of all the books they’ve read and/or wrote behind them in their videos.

Since I am a teacher, please take my word for it that it is ultimately up to ME and not the government to determine what is taught in my class. My administration is applauding the fact that I elected to take this critical thinking course so that my students will become better critical thinkers. And as a side note, when I gained my own sharp critical thinking skills during my adolescence, i was enlightened. I grew up in a conservative, Christian home and am now an atheist that votes democrat. So be careful what you wish for. Once teachers start doing a better job of teaching critical thinking in this country, there is going to be a political and religious exodus, but not in the direction you think.
