Suleiman's Sons: Only One Survived to Succeed Him

Suleiman the Magnificent ruled the Ottoman Empire for 46 years, from 1520 to 1566. He conquered vast lands in North Africa, Hungary, and Mesopotamia, and made his empire one of the most powerful in the world. He was the longest-serving sultan of the Ottomans, and he oversaw a population of at least 25 million people. He passed away at the age of 71, shortly before his army achieved a victory at the siege of Szigetvár in Hungary. Suleiman had many sons who could inherit his throne, but only one of them survived to see his father’s death.
This is the tragic story of Suleiman’s sons.

Feeling lucky not to be born as son of a sultan!

There are a few inconsistencies here. The main ones being:

1) Hürrem’s birth name was Alexandra or Anastasia. She was known as Roxelana due to her red hair.

2) Shezade Abdullah was the third son of Suleiman and Hürrem, not the second. (Both Mehmed and Selim were born before him).

3) There is no evidence that Sultana Hürrem and Rüstem Pasha were involved in Mustafa’s death - it was a rumour spread by her enemies, which many have latched onto. But the allegations have never been proved.

4) Selim did get a military assignment, like the rest of Suleiman’s sons, as this was the norm for all adult sons of the sultan. In fact, he succeeded his brother Mehmed as Governor of Manisa following Mehmed’s death in 1543. Later, he was assigned to go to the province of Konya.


5) Also, what about Suleiman’s other two sons from when he was a Prince (Shezade Mahmud and Shezade Murad), who both died in 1520? If you’re going to include Shezade Abdullah who died in infancy, then shouldn’t they be included too?

There are admittedly a lot of things we don’t know about how things were in history (as records weren’t always kept accurately). But if you’re going to make a video based on historical facts, then surely fact-checking is a must?

Ironic part is that literally the worst of his sons became the Sultan. Mustafa was the obvious choice, Mehmed was the best choice.

Even in the series they caught Suleiman mourning his son Mehmet even years after he died. He was his most beloved child along with sultana Mihrimah.

Suleyman may have been a big ruler, but he clearly was not successful in ruling his own household. From the harem situation, to marrying concubines and foreigners and the way he raised and treated his own sons. What a disappointment.
