How to build a Bug Hotel

I’ve made this and it’s a great success I added a bee feeder in the top for wild insects and they also feed on the mycelium growing on the wood chipping on the bottom layer/ pine video.thanks

This is a brilliant idea and it's wonderful to see someone advocating for the encouragement of invertebrates in the landscape versus their destruction. I imagine those bricks can hold moisture and it might not hurt to water the bricks when watering the plants. Does the planter have some drainage holes so moisture and plant roots can infiltrate into the bug house? I'm thinking of adding a few small drainage holes in the partitions, too. Might allow the tenants to travel between floors as well. I can't wait to build some of these in my yard and see who inhabits the layers!! Thanks for the inspiration!

Could you do an update to see how successful this bug hotel was? What insects did you attract? I heard that it's best to make these hotels concave at the top so that it will collect rainwater to keep it moist for the bugs. Flat hotels will just have the rainwater cascade on its edges.

I may give this a try but wonder if you had a problem with mice nesting on the first level. Would it make a difference if it was raised up off of the ground, so mice aren't a problem?
