The grey wasn’t caused by silco’s industrialization, it was generations before.
As piltover began industrializing, the kiramens of the last implemented the vents. Zaun was always toxic from the start of the show, as silco mentions how they were forced to mine in the fissures.

I absolutely love how they made us think it was some monster, only to reveal later that the monster is Caitlyn's band.

I think a bit of arrogance goes in everything Piltover (and by extension Catilyn) does in Zaun. Like, she pumped gas into the streets of Zaun and the thought never crossed her mind that Zaun (and by extension Jinx) could figure out a way to retalite. Jinx was having none of Catilyn's bullshit and blasted the toxic gas right back at Piltover.

I hate that Caitlyn didn’t opposite of what her mother did, but I found it impressive that jinx was able to redirect the Gray up to piltover

Zaun had factories long before the time skip. It is clearly the industrial area. Fume exposure in his childhood was killing Viktor. The Enforcers were wearing breathing masks in the prologue.

The grey is from the old lore, you know when a certain goddess of air that was used to be worshipped by shuriman sailors migrated all the way to Zaun because the people there are literally praying for clean air, the amount of suffering the grey caused during that period literally ressurected an old religion, hell you can see her visage during episode 3 season 2 engraved on the giant vent door as if she blessed the very ventilation system itself to protect Zaun from the grey, the Kurimans were simply the family who created the ventilation systems all over Zaun to redirect the concentrated factory smog ages ago, but it didn't eliminate the problem in the first place, people are still constantly exposed to the toxic conditions of the fissures, it simply made most of Zaun habitable again, without the Kuriman Vents Zaun is a deadzone

I thought the Kiramans got their status because they added the ventilations years before the story of arcane. Perhaps when Caitlyn’s mom was younger before having her daughter. I don’t know much of League of Legends lore, so how did the Kiramans get in their powerful position in the first place?

in the necrit video about act 1 it's pointed out, that the colour bombs from Jinx in the end also contain the Grey. I didn't think about that until now... so it was kind of a revenge to give the Grey back to them! :O

The grey is a dope concept i rlly loved the episode with vi and team searching the undercity for jinx 🔥coolest scene

The Kiramman legacy seems to be built on helping Piltover mostly and Zaun slightly with the pollution the city causes (old images of pipes bearing the Kiramman logo leading to the undercity + primitive gas masks with plague dr masks) and Cassandra built the ventilation system, but it was most likely just finished being built between s1 a1 and s1 a2. During the time in the true undercity during s1 a1 there is a green-grey haze over everything everytime we're not in a building, which is the same effect we've seen with the grey in s2 a1 just turned way down, and the enforcers have to wear gas masks down there. By s1 a2 though the enforcers don't have to and that haze is essentially gone which indicates the air is mostly clean now and based on the chembarons' reactions during s1 it has been like that for some time since Silco seems to be using a small amount of the grey or an off shoot of it in the greenhouse scene (slight green-grey haze + that swirling, oil slick effect in the air). This lines up more with the stories Jinx talked about Vander told them in the final episode, miners dying due polluted air before Silco probably even thought of Shimmer or maybe even before he was born because the rise of industry in Piltover also caused the rise of industry in the fissures because they are the same city, the undercity is simply the working/lower class of Piltover and mining is what gave way to industry for both because the main causes of mining are Economical, Technological, and Infrastructural development/advancement or "progress".

Honestly who knows how many Enforcers have killed innocent people who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time in the underground getting caught in the crossfire the hate is justified.

The fumes are way older than the time skip pal, in world and in the original lore of league of legends

I thought the grey was pre time skip due to gases being released in the fissures then cassandra made the ventilation system but the air still isn’t clean and that’s why the enforcers wear masks when they go to the undercity

Ehm The Grey existed before Silco took over Zaun with Chembarons.

Viktor was sick becouse of bad air = The grey which was for decades in Zaun.

When the old original Shuriman port Osha Va'Zaun was destroyed when they were trying to create a canal.

But the explosives used to build it caused the collapse and sinking of part of the city under water and part deep underground.

Many people died during this and certainly more would have died if it were not for the wind goddess Janna who protected many people from the waves of rolling water.

Thanks to the new canal and shipping trade, the city of Piltover was gradually built out of it, while what remains of the original city is now only Zaun.

Caitlyn’s mom didn’t make them, she inherit them. And the grey wasn’t done my Silco. It was already there.
