Pulling this off live is impressive. Backing singers brought that heat.

And this is why the 70s was the best decade pound for pound for music.

To say they don’t make ‘em like this anymore is an understatement

For those wondering, if you pause at 1:44, the band members (L-R) are backing vocalists Jenny "Bucky" Soule and Gloria "Porky" Granola, bassist/songwriter (the late) Walter Becker, lead vocalist/songwriter Donald Fagen, drummer/backing vocalist (the late) Jim Hodder, percussionist/backing vocalist Royce Jones, guitarist Denny Dias (rhymes with bias) and lead guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. This same lineup would appear in November 1973 on "American Bandstand, " lip-synching to the 45-single recording of "My Old School." When they toured in 1974 to promote their 3rd album, "Pretzel Logic, " they replaced Jenny and Gloria with backing vocalist and keyboardist Michael McDonald and added a 2nd drummer, the late-great Jeff Porcaro. Check out blonde vocalist Gloria (Giano) Granola six years later when she appeared with her husband (Dodgers catcher Steve Yeager) on a 1979 episode of the TV game show "Family Feud" (available on YouTube).

Just in case you thought Steely Dan was just a studio creature with unlimited takes to get it just right... These guys could bring it live any time, any day.

Live Steely Dan footage from the 70's is pretty rare actually. They stopped touring in 1974.

They got the shapely bodies
They got the Steely Dan T-Shirt
And for the coup de grace
They're outrageous...

this is one of the most 70’s things i’ve ever seen. the midnight special itself is just the epitome of the era

This song is remarkable for a hundred reasons, but one is that there's a guitar "solo" the whole length of the song.

This is the Steely Dan I love the most. A real band with so much energy. And indeed, Jeff Baxter is killing it.

I was so lucky to be a 70s kid. The quality and variety of music was mind blowing

Those backup singers are a show by themselves.

The backup singers deserved all the attention that they got!

I keep coming back to this video for the backup singers.

Absolutely outstanding. I love how they obviously refused to change the lyric for television. Bonus points for great hippie chick background singers and Walter Becker’s hair.

The grit. The satire. And Skunk burning it up.

rick derringer's original slide guitar was great but skunk baxter's rendition also is impeccable.
