Went there myself & yeah after climbing, it’s definitely a disappointment so aptly named

I actually turn off my street onto Cockburn road. A popular name in WA, named after Sir Admiral George Cockburn. It is pronounced by locals as CO-BURN, it has a silent 'ck'. Loved the video thanks.

I used to live near tumble down dick hill as a kid. It was named after a bullock that fell down the hill.

A lot of those place names would have been coined by gold miners, folk we'd call rough as guts. Not the kind of folk who'd be at home in a formal drawing room, but aussies none the less. Plenty of them, richer than you could guess. Who would say no to them? Woolamaloo is an aboriginal word, not a problem for us to say, he got it all wrong though.

There's a place in Victoria near Mt Mitta Mitta called Towong. The most famous thing about Towong is that Towong's don't make a right. Lol. But yes, there are heaps of funny place names down here.

The residents of Bogan (place or whatever) petitioned to the Council for a name change. It was rejected. I would never live on a street called many bad connotations.

Congrats on using 'Taking the pi$$" exactly right. :)

Woolloomooloo is a suburb in Sydney. Aboriginal name. Pronounced "WOOL-er-MER-loo".

The narrator in that video did a LOT of mispronunciations, I should point out.

A key to pronouncing many Aussie place names is to put hard primary emphasis on the first syllable and swallow the rest. For example, Melbourne is "MELL-bin". Not, as many Yanks say, "mell-BOOOORN". Adelaide is "AD-laid", not "adel-IDE'. Canberra is "KAN-bra", but if you're a politician or otherwise trying to seem better than you are, it might be "kan-BER-ah. Brisbane is "BRIZ-bin", not 'briss-BANE". And so on.

Continuing to enjoy your intro to the awesomeness that is Australia. :)
