Rev. ANTHONY WOLFSON was born in Manchester 1967. His paternal grandfather was Rev. Moses Charles (Maurice/Moshe) Wolfson. Although Rev. Moses Charles Wolfson passed away in 1970, it was Anthony’s father who instilled in him his grandfather's love and knowledge of nusach hatefilla and encouraged him to sing, daven and lein, whenever opportunities arose. Anthony inherited his grandfather's sweet singing voice.
Anthony's maternal grandfather, Abraham Cohen (1906-1966, Manchester), was a first cousin of Cantor Reuben Boyarsky (1885-1975). Anthony attended Manchester Jewish Grammar School. As a child growing up at Holy Law Synagogue, he was influenced by Chazan Reuben Berkovits, Chazan Moishe Warshawski, Chazan David Gordon, and in particular Chazan Sheni Dr Joseph Jaffe (some time Mayor of Salford; died 17 November 1995) with whom Anthony was close from the time he was a very small child.
Having inherited a love of davening and music from both sides of his family, he davened for the amud from age 13. In 1988, he was appointed part time chazan/minister at the Chelsea Synagogue, Central London, whilst still a student at Jews’ College.
In 1990, he officiated over Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur as the chazan at St Annes Hebrew Congregation, Lancashire, and in April 1991 was appointed to the post of part-time Chazan of Wembley United Synagogue, a post he held for 20 years until 2011 when his family moved to Edgware.
Anthony continued to return to Wembley as Chazan for the yamim noraim and sukkot for the next six years until 2017 and continued to officiate with the choir there. During this time, he also officiated as visiting chazan at Wembley on a number of Shabbatot, such as Shabbat Mevarchim when the choir sang.
Speaking at the induction service for Rabbi Simon Harris on 16 March 2008, Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks paid warm tribute to Anthony for having served the Wembley Community “for so long and with such great distinction.”
Anthony's association as Chazan at Wembley United lasted 26 years, the longest serving chazan in the synagogue’s ninety-year history.
In his early days at Wembley, he studied nusach hatefilla and chazanut at Jews' College, and privately with Chazan Geoffrey Shisler, who was the chazan in neighbouring Kenton Synagogue, with Chazan Shmuel Neuman (then at Hendon United) and with Chazan Moshe Haschel (then at Finchley Synagogue). Anthony studied the extensive Wembley Choral repertoire with choirmaster Lew Jackson. From 1989 to 1994, Anthony had the privilege of receiving vocal coaching from Norman Welsby, former principal baritone of the English National Opera, Covent Garden. Anthony then continued to receive voice and singing training from other singing coaches from 1994 to 2001.
He recorded “Wembley Memories”, a tape with the Wembley Synagogue Choir in 1994 and performed at a concert held at Wembley Synagogue in 2017 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Wembley Synagogue Choir.
There are a number of recordings of him singing with the London Cantorial Singers, and also with the London Jewish Male Choir on his YouTube channel which were recorded in the 1990's.
As Chazan at Wembley United, he represented the Jewish community in Brent singing at various London Borough of Brent civic ceremonies, such as Holocaust Memorial Day and the Brent Annual Remembrance Parade at Barham Park, Wembley, with other religious officiants and civic dignitaries. From 2014 to 2016, he sang as chazan with a choir at Edgware United's AJEX Service held each November, and in April 2014 and April 2017, he sang at Edgware United's Yom Hashoah service.
A qualified teacher, he holds a B.Ed. (Hons) degree from Jews' College as well as an MA in Hebrew and Jewish Studies from the University of London and a Master of Education Degree from the University of Bath. He has been in primary school education for over 30 years, teaching in a number of Jewish Primary schools in London and a head teacher for over 20 years.
