It took me 8 tries to get this right but here is what I discovered:
- The number of sections have to be even
- I used 3" wide x 6" long 32lb paper for the folding.
- I used my scoring board and scored at 1/2" intervals to make 12 sections.
- Folding must be precise for this to work
- When you start doing the triangle fold you must start with a SINGLE flap on the left and fold the doubled paper on the RIGHT.
- I used a binder clip on the right edge to keep the folds together then did the triangles, removed the clip, flipped and clipped again.
- The triangle folds must be precise - the whole thing goes wonky if it isn't perfect
- The "pages" can be as wide as you like but they need to be slightly less than 2" high. I cut mine to 1 7/8". You lose 1/2" top and bottom with the triangle fold down
- When putting in the page, the points of the triangle fold down MUST align with the crease. If it doesn't, the page will be wonky.
- I tried using cheap index cards as the pages but they are too stiff. Either 20lb or 32lb copier paper would be better.

So...your LENGTH of your paper strip that you accordion fold can be whatever you like BUT it must be an even number of panels once folded.

The WIDTH of your paper strip can be whatever you like but I think the max is 4".

Use copier paper to perform your tests. In this instance, precision is absolutely required or it won't work.

The book doesn't want to stay closed. I'm thinking that scoring at 3/4" and using a lighter weight paper for the accordion may solve that problem.

When i learned this bookbinding technique it was called Crown Binding. You can also use single cut pages (including watercolor or sketched pieces on heavy paper) and slip each one in individually, adding or rearranging them whenever.🙂
