Laura Nyro CBS News Sunday Morning 2001

Laura Nyro was one of the most talented singer songwriters in popular music but unfortunately not many people know about her as she never had a big selling album or single during her career. Many others sucessfully covered her songs and had top ten hits with them in the late 60's and early 70's. In my book, Laura Nyro is right up there with Joni Mitchell and Carol King as one of the greatest female singer songwriters ever. This was a CBS Sunday Morning story on her from 2001, several years after Laura passed away from ovarian cancer at age 49. Do yourself a favor and get Laura's first two albums: 1967's More Than A New Discovery and 1968's Eli & The 13th Confession. You will not be disappointed.

I never heard of Laura Nyro until today and I can't get enough. She was an absolute musical genius, very talented and inspirational.

First song I ever heard was “You don’t love me when I cry.” From a butterfly whisper to thundering tempest in less than a heartbeat. I was STUNNED and have never been the same person since that day.

What an incredible talent she was…her songs will always stand the test of time. Any record label
would be lucky to have Laura’s incredible music. So missed! ❤❤❤❤

Laura Nyro. A great talent. They don't come along very often, the likes of her. Her songs speak for themselves. They show true greatness. She was a genius. It's just a shame that so many people didn't realize it at the time when she was alive.

It still breaks my heart that she is gone. She's right up there with The Beatles in my book. That's right I said it and I meant it.

I had no idea she passed from Ovarian cancere at such an early age. I, myself, was diagnosed with the same disease 10 years later than she was, but, fortunately I beat it. I always loved her voice and songs from Wedding Bell Blues and more. Thank you Laura Nyro.. You were one of the

No one sang with more raw gut punch soul than she did, it is absolutely ridiculous that she isnt on some Mt Rushmore for female musical artists.

Billy's Blues is a particular favorite, but her entire songbook is exceptional. She comes up in a rotation of songs...and I sob. What a sweet release she offers.

A tribute well done. Thank you. What struck me lately is something that Todd Rundgren once said: after listening to how Lauro Nyro writes songs, he changed his approach to writing himself. And if you're familiar with both artists, you'll know that the veracity of that confession is unmistakable.

Laura's music is simply, one of a kind. I bought her 1st album on Vanguard, back in late '66, & was just speechless at what I was hearing. To this day, " I Never meant to Hurt You ", still, makes me tear up. she has that effect on me. RIP, Gorgeous Laura Nyro. 74 y/o

Watching this, I had non-stop chills running all over my body. I was a fan of hers from the moment I heard Wedding Bell Blues, back in the day when it was released. I saw her lip synching it on a music program at that time & I was hooked. To me, she is a giant, a incomparable genius. Love you Laura Nyro, RIP.

I agree with the gentleman below. New York Tendaberry is my number one album of all time. I have already told my family that when it is my time to go, I want New York Tendaberry played at my memorial service. I can't think of a better way to transition from one life to the next.
