OXY is developing technology for carbon dioxide removal. They can then sell credits, extract more oil and prolong the use of oil indefinitely, if they can get to carbon neutral with the process. That's what Buffett is betting on.

OXY is a capital allocation play. The CEO is a master at it, and Buffett knows it. It is like a high paying dividend stock to him with free cashflow buying back shares, reducing debt, and paying dividends. Steady returns in an overvalued market. And the billions of barrels in the Permian Basin - valued at market prices on the balance sheet. His railroads need fuel. Makes total sense as an investment for BH.

Question: Paul always says that a higher FCF than net-income is good. Is this because net income has relatively weird things included such as unrealised losses resulting from price-fluctuations of the company's assets?

I also do not get it about OXY. Compare to other oil companies it looks not so good. And trend is down. Maybe he knows something that will reverse that trend in future, but for me it does not look like a good buy today.

Hi Paul, I really respect your opinion and mentality on things and would love your opinion on a question a friend is dealing with. I know you can’t give financial advice, but would love your opinion. They have recently acquired a substantial amount of money. They are not going to buy rentals start a business, etc. The money is going in the market and it is going into a VTI or a VOO, until they learn more. My question is how you would add the money to the market. I wouldn’t think you would just dump it all into the market at once, so what is a good rule of thumb when dollar cost averaging with a very substantial amount that you just obtained?
