How-to Launch A Stunt Kite Tutorial

This video shows how to launch a kite by yourself. It’s easier to launch a stunt kite with another person, who then throws the kite into the air when there is a gust of wind. However, sometimes no one is available to help. This video has no commentary, so read the description for instructions. I also modified this kite to make it better.

This is really a very simple to launch a kite by yourself. Remember, the kite always has to be downwind of you, launching straight into the wind. There are two techniques. The easiest technique is to lean the kite up against something like a soccer goal post. Then just pull back hard, run backwards a couple of steps, and the kite is launched into a gust of wind. The other technique is to point the kite away from you, as illustrated in the video. Put tension on the strings, until the kite is standing on it’s tail. The wind holds it in place. Once there is a big gust of wind, pull back hard on both strings, and run backwards. The kite should launch upwards.

It takes a bit of practice to launch and steer the kite. Stunt kites can do tricks, as illustrated in the video. It takes a little bit of touch to get the feel of the kite. Pull the kite in one direction, and it turns in that direction. Pull the other string, upsetting the balance of the kite, and it will turn in the opposite direction. Practice makes perfect.

I also put some tuck tape onto the back edge of the kite, where the kite flaps, to stop the material from fraying. This caused the kite to make a loud sound, which is kind of cool. I also attached long pieces of flagging tape to the kite wing tips, which stabilizes the kite in a strong wind, making it more controllable. The kite eventually broke, and I fixed it with an old fishing rod, splinting the kites broken fiberglass rod. Now I didn’t have to buy a new kite.

Many people live from pay check to pay check, meaning it’s very difficult to save money. Some spend a lot of money on entertainment. If you get a hobby, in could be a cheap form of entertainment, costing very little. For example, my stunt kite wasn’t that expensive, and it has given me hours of fun entertainment. If you were to take up running or knitting or something like that, both of which are potentially very enjoyable activities, this form of entertainment could be both fun and beneficial at the same time. Buying a pair of running shoes might be a better use of money than buying a lottery ticket, because the odds of winning are so low with the lottery ticket. If you take up running as a hobby, you’ll probably get fit, which is a guaranteed pay off. Additionally, doesn’t cost much to run.

Find yourself an interesting hobby, it could be very entertaining, and also possibly beneficial.

Don't have a friend throw the kite in the air. Very very simple to launch by yourself. Hands in front of you wrists near each other. Extend your hands forward, and the same time you snap your hands back to your hips take a step back. No need to run, the kite will easily lift into the air. Think of steering like riding a bicycle, not driving a car. Opening your arms wide like you are being crucified doesn't control the turn. simple push/pull turns, the difference of one hand to the other is a few inches. Once you can fly with intent and control, time to up it to slack line tricks!!

Wow...the tape for the noise is red in two places? Love how you showed launching with soccer net...I just got a cheap small Hengda stunt kite and havn't been able to get it to fly yet, but a guy at the beach got it to fly for a minute and it does work :) I have 75' line now and I'm thinking of making shorter to 65'...I also love the tails on the wings, but I'll try to learn without doing that, as you said it will make it harder to fly.

First off red goes on the right hand. 2nd to launch you move both hands down towards the ground, not above your head

What wind speed is best for self launching. I'm trying and failing at a variable wind, topping at 9mph. Is it even possible to fly with variable winds from next to nothing to 9mph?
