Empi (SLOW) - Shotokan Karate Kata JKA

Henrik Oesten Sensei 5th Dan from Denmark, performing Empi / Enpi in the style of Funakoshi Sensei. In slowmotion.

There's a big difference watching a kata at speed vs in slow motion. This sensei shows excellent balance. He performs Empi exactly as we were taught in my Shotokan dojo. It's an advanced level lata and might turn out to be just a little more difficult to master than you originally imagined. Try video taping your own execution of this kata then slow it down by 5x and you're likely to see many errors, regardless of how many times you practice it. People who are the worst critics are often armchair judges who haven't made an attempt themselves.

I will have all the people picking this Sensei apart remember that martial arts is about respect. It is about constructive critsism and humility. All martial artists and the way they do their kata are going to be different depending on physical abilities, interpretation, and style. Even Gichin Funakoshi never perfected his kata and he CREATED them. So please show some respect for the work put in by this sensei and others. Thank you.

The performance of Empi was meant to familiarise a student with the kata. then you strive to perfect. you don't do it for others you do it for ones self.

this kata is amazing but sai-fa is more deadly and basa-dai looks cooler except for the jump, btw your cu-cuts is good

Stance is way too high. Especially the back stance and kiba dachi.

kanku-dai and hangetsu are nothing compared to empi but basudai sci-fa tagaiyoku shodan and tagaiyoku nidan does not go for black tip or shodan ho katas
