Good ideas, but ultimately, the system you should use is the one that works for you. I also advise against keeping a lot of paper. Digitize everything you can, and keep only precious originals of documents, photos, and letters. Am I keeping the poem my mom wrote to my dad when they married? Definitely. Am I keeping paper copies of census records? No way. Many people don't have much storage space, and, let's face it, most of our family are not as interested in family history as we genealogists are. The risk you run when you keep mountains of research is that it will one day get tossed when you're gone because your family sees it as overwhelming clutter and doesn't want it.

This is very close to what I have done for years. I even use white notebooks.
