This is how i understand MAC's explanation about NC and NW... their makeup tones are used to "neutralize" the prominent tone in our skins, like if you have red-ish or pinky tones you can neutralize it by using the NC range to make it a bit more warmer and if you have yellowish or olive undertones then you can neutralize it by using the NW range to add a bit of coolness in your skin tone or to make it more neutral. Hope this helps. It's really not confusing.

hi all if if helps, my cousin is a MUA for MAC and here' s the way she explained it: the reason MAC appears opposite is because they are trying to neutralize the overall tone of the skin. So if you are warm toned, you would get a NC foundation b/c you are mitigating the redness/warmth of your skin. Its the same principal for cool toned skin; you would get a NW to balance the cool in your skin. The 'N' simply means neutral for those with both cool and warm undertones. Cheers!

I understand the system and this video confused me. Why would NC seem warm to us? NC to most of us would mean cool. I think you confused people by saying it's not not warm and it's not not cool. Wow I am so confused right now

MAC people say that reason the colors are reversed is because cool understones need more warmth so Neutral Warm is a match to them and warm undertones need more coolness so Neutral Cool is a match to them. I honestly think that they messed up the names of the foundations when they first came out and decided to own it.

This video is only confusing to some of you because you aren't paying attention.. It actually makes a lot of sense.

I don't understand why everyone is so confused, MAC's way of describing it makes more sense to me.

I just wanna thank you for doing all these videos about foundation. Sometimes when I go to a counter and just ask them to help me pick the right shade for me, they choose the shade that I think doesn't really work. (MAC people especially tend to be pretty forceful and try to rush us into buying products, at least in my country) So it's good to have background and tips for choosing your own shade.

I always use nc37, and nc42 when I'm tan and I was always confused by this because they are perfect matches for my skin, even though I consider myself to have warm skin(duh) haha. But I didn't understand why it would be named nc. Thanks for the clarification!

I just think of it like NW = Not Warm and NC as Not Cool. Thats the only way it sinks in for me.

Idk why everyone is so confused right now. It makes perfect sense to me!! Thank you!!

When a company has different customs (usually from a different country) they do this sometimes

I'm a solid neutral and I always get matched with NW. I'm fair skinned and when I tan I rarely burn. Every other company I have to get neutral foundations I can't do cool or warm. I also have a natural neutral tone blond hair color (dirty blond) I can go warm very easily and I can go cool tones easily as well. Hope this helps someone.

I really wanted to buy this foundation but I had a lot of confusion in NC and NW. Your video cleared all my doubts. Thanks a lot mam.

I was a bit confused of that bcs... I have yellow skin undertone and I buy Estée Lauder in shade 1W1. So first time when I wanted to buy MAC pro longwear concealer I was thinking about NW 15. But I was in the MAC store 2 days ago and I said to the shop assistant that I want the lightest one with yellow undertone and she gave me NC15. I was looking for answers and I finally found it :) thank you very much :)

I have a lot of redness but in the past cool toned foundations are just so pink toned I look orange! surely i need a yellow toned foundation to counteract the pink and red undertones? x

Hey guys, i see how this video is very confusing to those of you in the comments. As a MAC employee I will break it down quickly and simply. Cool tones are in the yellow/blue range and warm tones are in the Pink range. So NW is (neutral WARM) if you have pinky undertones go for this one and NC is (Neutral cool) which is for yellow undertones. If you don't know what your undertone is, you can usually tell by looking at your neck creases, or inner elbow area. Also keep in mind, that some people are a mixture of both, I have several regular customers that have to purchase 2 foundations and mix
