#89: Unpacking proposals to overhaul US foreign aid

This week we dig into the different proposals on how the Trump administration could reform foreign assistance. According to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s post on the social media platform X, 1,000 programs will be retained, with plans to potentially fold USAID into the State Department.

We also learned that Peter Marocco, who acted as deputy administrator of USAID for 6 weeks, has officially left USAID but remains at the State Department. However, given that the two government bodies may be interlinked in the not-so-distant future, he may still play a role in the shaping of U.S. foreign aid.

With programs being canceled, reinstated, and canceled again, a great deal of uncertainty remains on what programs will be kept at the end of the process.

The Department of Government Efficiency has also taken over the U.S. Institute of Peace, which appears to be the first nonprofit Elon Musk’s agency attempted to breach.

What will become of USAID? Which foreign aid programs will be kept?

To unpack these stories, Senior Reporter Adva Saldinger sits down with President and Editor-in-Chief Raj Kumar and Global Development Reporter Elissa Miolene for the latest episode of our weekly podcast series.

US Govt. spends maybe 1/20 of what American citizens give to the world, in remittances, charity & aid from churches synagogues & mosques. Also, USAID was less than 10 percent effective with this aid. So the American people are roughly 200 times more generous than our government.

Yall sound very self-important with your acronyms and jargon. Get a clue: in the big scheme, y’all’s work is barely a blip. The American People are doing all the actually effective work.

The entire budget of USAID was less than what Indians and Pakistanis in the US sent back home in remittances. And while a tiny fraction of what USAID actually got to needy people, ALL of the remittances did.

Mexican Americans send more in remittances than the entire profit of PEMEX: the massive nationalized oil company of Mexico.

Americans are a powerhouse as individuals—and we are largely ineffective as a government charity.

I visited your youtube channel and saw that the videos are impressing many beautiful people soon but the videos have some problems that's why the likes and views of the videos are very less according to the channel subscribes. If you do SEO on the videos, the likes and subscribes of the videos will increase and your channel will spread among the people worldwide and you will have your channel in top 10 and you can earn money from it.
