New Drug Development - GCSE Biology

🦊 In this GCSE Biology video, we outline the process of drug development in the pharmaceutical industry, highlighting that most drugs are synthesized, or made, by chemists. The development process is costly and time-consuming, often beginning with a chemical extracted from a plant. New medical drugs undergo extensive testing and trials to ensure they are safe and effective, involving three key areas: toxicity (testing for harmful side effects), efficacy (assessing effectiveness), and determining the correct dosage. The testing process includes preclinical trials on cells, tissues, and animals, followed by clinical trials on humans. For exams, it's important to understand these stages of drug development and testing.
