How to Install Heatsinks on the Raspberry Pi 4 (CanaKit) + Temperature Performance Comparison

This quick video shows how to install the CanaKit heatsinks on the Raspberry Pi 4. It also gives a brief comparison of thermal performance with and without the heatsinks installed.

The CanaKit Raspberry Pi 4 kits don't provide information on where to put the heatsinks. I couldn't easily find the info elsewhere online, so I made this video to give clear instructions on where the heatsinks should be placed.

Needed a question answered.
Found a video that's 2.5 min long, doesn't have a bullshit opener with tons of ear-shattering dubstep, there is no begging for likes and subs, and it just flat out answers the question at hand without any unnecessary exposition.

Seriously, what more can you ask from a tutorial?
10/10 would watch more from this user.

I’m amazed how great this video is it’s helpful and straight to the point you don’t get that a lot these days thank you

Best tutorial on heatsink. The others assumes you know how to peel the blue tape. I almost took it all seeing other tutorials, luckly I decided to stop and search a little more, then I found yours. Thank you.

But at the end I was sad because the heatsink has almost zero impact on the heat. Not cool, not cool at all they selling things so bad at what it should do.

Anyway, thank you for your big help.

Thank you so much! I wasn't sure which direction to point the slats which your video answered. I would also recommend installing the medium size heatsink before the large one so it's easier to get your fingers in there.

Finally, i watched this video.
There is a DOUBLE END TAPE between the heat sink and the Pi Board. It will be better if HEAT SINKS are installed using some heat sink paste to achieve better results.
Keep uploading ideas and

Watched this because my CanaKit RPi4 kit came with no heat sink installation instructions, but now wondering if there's any point to it after seeing the before & after temp comparisons. 🤔🤔🤔

You totally saved me. Another YouTube video I found told me to install the heat sinks in the wrong locations (over the wifi chip and some other wrong spot.) As a result, my machine was practically melting and severely underperformed. Moved the sinks and all is well now!

Wait what? no difference in temperature?! Thanks for the info. Should have watch this video before I ordered mine.

A problem with these adhesive heatsinks might be that the adhesive/thermal pads act as insulators instead of properly conducting the heat onto the heatsink.

So these don't touch the alluminum case at all...?
And where does the fan go?

Is the adhesive on the heatsink a good conductor of heat?

I dont know but somehow the glue doesnt look like its a good heat conductor. Is there a way to use more traditional heat paste and fix those heatsinks in a different way?

Did you have the Pi in a case for this test? Heatsinks only work if they have something to transfer the heat to, like air flow. Without air flow to take heat away, the heat sink will just warm up to the same temperature.

Thanks for the quick and to-the-point video!

does the orientation of the heatsinks matter? ie if channels are horizontal or vertical?

Thanks, I wasn't sure where the rectangular one should go. I had 4 heatsinks, actually. Two tiny squares aside from the larger square and rectangle

Thank you. I got my heatsink kit from Melopero with my RPi kit. There were no instructions in that kit either.

I have a problem I have 2 big square ones and one small but no rectangular can I use the big square for the memory? Or does it need to be the rectangular
